Don’t get used to the exhilaration, It is a bubble that will soon burst To be followed by the long deprivation And the unbroken thirst. Get used to the soberness instead, It will stay for longer than you hope And will be your daily bread With which you have to daily cope. I try not to yearn for the happiness, But the heart is treacherous; Unbidden it feels a new tenderness - This happens to all of us. And there are some pains you prepare for - They will always come, come back to you, For once upon a time it was you who tore It out of your heart and gave it a job to do. Of Seeking
YEAR OF ACHING
What a difference a year can make Depending on the path you take The pillars you shake The bonds you break The demons or the angels you wake And the thirsts you slake. For whose or for what’s sake? For something real or for something fake? Some say the heart is a lake Beneath its surface there swims a snake Your happiness is at stake And yet all you seem to do is ache and ache. Che Chidi Chukwumerije Poems from the inner river
THE HEART’S INDEPENDNECE
Your Heart is an independent being, Don’t mess with it or it will show you pepper. All the wahala you think you’ve been seeing Will be yam when it shows you real shege. It will riot and refuse to obey you; It will sing praise songs to your enemies; It will believe things that are not true And long for its own self-decided remedies. It will turn into a wild unpredictable stranger With its own rules and on its own mission; It will rush forward and fear no danger, Driven by its own incomprehensible Vision. And when it hurts it will burn like hellfire; And when it laughs, you feel you’re in paradise; And when it loves it loves with fierce desire; But if it dies, your urge to live also dies. Che Chidi Chukwumerije Poems from the inner river
PATTERNS
One thing about life Patterns repeat themselves Next thing about life Patterns repeat themselves Another thing about life Patterns repeat themselves Until you break them. Che Chidi Chukwumerije Poems from the inner river
ONCE YOU TASTE TRUE LOVE
Once you taste true love Lust becomes a mechanical chore Pleasure is no longer enough You want something more. You learn to recognise the grain And separate it from the chaff - You want to feel that joy again You want your heart to laugh. Che Chidi Chukwumerije Poems from the inner river
LOOKING EVERYWHERE
When people find what they are looking for They find it’s not what they are looking for And then they begin to look for Clarity about what they are really looking for. And they look for clarity everywhere, In everything, in every way, they dare Every adventure, no matter how rare, Every experience that might get them there. Because the possession of clarity About one’s path and identity Is the actual meaning of true life-quality And the paramount shaper of reality. Che Chidi Chukwumerije Poems from the inner river
MY PATH
I‘m just on my lonely path But very few people know And even those that know Still don’t really know Because how can you know What I don’t truly show? The nature of my sorrow The depth of my flow For I still have many miles to go In my search for tomorrow And only I truly know The loneliness of my path. Che Chidi Chukwumerije Poems from the inner river
THE SEARCH FOE HAPPINESS
There is a pursuit on which we all are, a selfish or simply a personal pursuit; the pursuit of happiness. Everybody who connects with you does so in the course of their own pursuit of happiness. Once they become convinced that they cannot find happiness with you or through you, they will leave you. Don’t take it personal. Because you are also on a similar journey in your own life and in your own path.
Everything you do, everything you hope for, everybody you relate with, it is – finally – with the desire and with the expectation that you will find happiness there. Happiness is our paradise, it is our goal, it is what we all seek. The balance is to be able to find happiness without negatively impacting your physical or ethereal environment, and without unfairly and unjustly diminishing another person’s happiness as the price of yours.
But, somehow, you will still sometimes make others unhappy just to make yourself happy. It is unavoidable. And Vice versa. Because we are imperfect maturing developing beings. When they leave you, leave them too and move on, in the pursuit of your own happiness. If you seek, one day you shall find. In this life or in another, if you continue to seek happiness with a good heart and a pure mind, one day you shall happiness truly and deeply find.

Undulating Plains
I DREAM EVERY TIME I FALL ASLEEP
I dream every time I fall asleep And it’s always one adventure or the other; Conversations with beloveds I keep, My best friend, my father, my brother, And strangers too with whom I laugh and weep And fight and love and comfort one another; The dangers are real, the emotions are deep, Every fear, every tear, every worry and bother; At times I weightless fly, or I burdened creep, Through encounters that liberate or smother, But I’m always conscious even in the Deep, As awake as a baby born out of its mother. For I have vows to keep and sowed seeds to reap - And before it gets lighter it will get darker - And miles to go and never really sleep. Che Chidi Chukwumerije Poems from the inner river
EVERYONE CAN BE HAPPY
There is somebody that loves you genuinely; May you find that person - And may you also love that person genuinely. But if you don’t find or love that person, Still may you find happiness in life. Not everyone finds a husband or a wife, But everyone can be happy genuinely. Che Chidi Chukwumerije Poems from the inner river
