BRAVE ONE

Your secrets
Give them power over you
When you lose your fear of your secrets
They lose their power over you

No-one is feared more
Than one who says yes I did it, so what?
You can break a warrior’s shell
But you cannot make the warrior fear you as well.

Breathe out, brave one, and live some more
Your weaknesses and your strengths are all you’ve got.

– Che Chidi Chukwumerije.

THE PERSON WITHIN

I saw a big spirit
Carrying a small body
Upright and light and taller
Than the giants that dwarfed her

I saw a strong spirit
Carrying a crippled body
Gracefully, effortlessly, healing
The minds that came his way.

Like the seasons that change
So every Body will go
But our natures will stay
And spirit, spirit will find a way

To break through the shell
And say Hello.

– Che Chidi Chukwumerije.

LARGE GREY CLOUDS

swallow that pride
step aside
that narrow heart, it is a road
open it wide

lei in that sunshine
look out the window
that thing out there that makes you
feel so good, it is light
and you’ve got it in your eyes

sometimes, locked away
i espy the large grey cloud
i understand that you are proud
is it so hard to let go?
to let those feelings show?

guess it must really be hard or
you would have done it long ago –
i see it in your eyes.

– Che Chidi Chukwumerije.

DAWN BEFORE DAWN

The light that comes
Comes from within –
Sun, moon and stars
Are stars in your own inner film
Morning comes with distant murmurings
Trains and cars and birdsongs gurgling
Silence broken by the rain
And swallowed up in silence again.

– Che Chidi Chukwumerije.

THE INNER ROSE

Beware of those
Who like the wind does
To the petals of the rose

Like the mind blows
The poetry out of the prose
– Those who sense

The source of your strength
And work only to dent
And take away your self-confidence.

– Che Chidi Chukwumerije.

SURVIVAL

What don’t I know
About you is what
I silently ask myself
Each time you ask me
What I’m thinking
As I think about you

How many wars
Have you fought, won and lost?
How many lives have
You taken, how many given?
How much hunger did you endure
To nourish so much anger?

How many loves have pierced you?
How many wounds are
Dripping a trail back to
How many acts of survival?
All I see is the smile in your eyes
And the hope in your heart.

– Che Chidi Chukwumerije.

ALL OF IT

Bear with grace
Life’s every face
Truth is a buffet
Conscience is selective
I guess everyone is right
According to taste

You’ll always be someone else
To someone else
But the sum of your contradictions
Contradicts each one of them –
But bear with grace
Every face, life’s every phase.

– Che Chidi Chukwumerije.

YOUR ONE TRUE FRIEND IS YOU

A broken heart, how shall it mend?
Who shall this garden tend?

My heart, my heart… break not, nor bend
But remain into every end

My unwavering friend.

– Che Chidi Chukwumerije.
